To: Editor Vancouver Sun,

I am writing in response to the article “Milk may not do a body good: Study finds ovarian cancer link” published in Friday August 5, 2005 issue of the Vancouver Sun.

In Larsson’s review of various observational studies, and consistent with other research, there is no clearly demonstrated cause-and-effect link between milk and risk of ovarian cancer.

Rather, we have overwhelming evidence for the health benefits of milk and milk products. Canadian women are in great need of the nutrients found in dairy products, not just the calcium but a combination of many vitamins and minerals. All of these products reduce their risk of colon cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, kidney stones, and pre-menstrual syndrome, to name just a few. In addition, we haven't seen any change in the rates of ovarian cancer in spite of the decline in milk consumption.

As quoted in the Montreal Gazette article, “Larsson said she is not recommending women stop drinking milk…”. For a study such as this to be used to turn women away from dairy consumption is unfortunate.
